Fountain for pond aeration
One of the best tools we have to deal with water quality problems in fish ponds is aeration. It’s never too early or too late to consider raising your pond through aeration setup. Aeration comes in many forms, but the two most common are the floating fountain aerators and aerated systems that are spread out in the air. Each has its benefits, and often both types of aeration can be used in combination to maximize these benefits to the pond. Aeration throughout the year is the single best management practice available to lake and pond owners. There is an inverse relationship between temperature and total dissolved oxygen levels which can be held water. As water temperatures increase, the level of dissolved oxygen in the pond will naturally decrease. However, when the water temperature drops, the dissolved oxygen content in the pond will naturally increase. You can further increase the dissolved oxygen increase this by running the aeration system during colder temperatures, so adding more oxygen dissolved into the water at that time naturally can receive more.
Additionally, if you already have a surface aeration in place, you should consider letting it run 24 hours a day, because the benefits of aeration to the lake or pond is actually higher in the evening. Photosynthesis and other biological processes work in the pool during the day when there is direct exposure to sunlight which really helps to naturally improve dissolved oxygen levels in the water. At night, or on a very cloudy day, the lack of sunlight slows down this process, usually resulting in lower levels of dissolved oxygen in the pond. The benefits of running the aeration system at night is very deep, so it needs some thought to leave it on all night.
